In Kresge\u2019s five-and-dime?<br \/>\nEarly dark made the front windows into slabs of black,<\/p>\n<p>so with card in hand, I drifted down the aisle<br \/>\nto my favorite spot past the pink lingerie, and dreamed<\/p>\n<p>at a tank teeming with goldfish, watching them<br \/>\nspurt and glide, balance perfectly still, before facing<\/p>\n<p>that brittle outside dark again. Oh, don\u2019t worry,<br \/>\nyou\u2019ll have chocolate, and roses too, but remember<\/p>\n<p>how once, windward of the jetty, we lost the engine?<br \/>\nI drop the anchor quick but those quarry rocks,<\/p>\n<p>blacker for the sun and pale blue water, keep coming<br \/>\ncloser and closer. My eyes race down the rope<\/p>\n<p>through thirty feet of water clear as dreamfright<br \/>\nto where the anchor flukes are plowing the bottom,<\/p>\n<p>then catch on coral, halting those ragged black rocks<br \/>\nonly ten feet from our hull.
