{"id":183,"date":"2016-06-15T16:50:08","date_gmt":"2016-06-15T16:50:08","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.makuck.com\/home\/?page_id=183"},"modified":"2016-06-15T16:50:08","modified_gmt":"2016-06-15T16:50:08","slug":"gray-fox","status":"publish","type":"page","link":"http:\/\/www.makuck.com\/home\/sample-writing\/gray-fox\/","title":{"rendered":"Gray Fox"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>All morning I\u2019ve watched the snow fly,<br \/>\nlooking up from a page of the same color.<br \/>\nSometimes wind will rattle the shutters,<br \/>\ncreak the joists and rafters<br \/>\nas if the house were talking to itself.<\/p>\n<p>My window frames a white emptiness<br \/>\nuntil suddenly, as if conjured, he\u2019s there<br \/>\nmaybe twenty feet from the glass<br \/>\nwith a limp rabbit, long hind legs<br \/>\ndangling from his jaws.<\/p>\n<p>At home here<br \/>\nbefore our house was built,<br \/>\nthis gray has apparently decided to stay.<br \/>\nThough at a holiday fish fry,<br \/>\nour wined-up neighbor mumbled<br \/>\nabout abnormal behavior, rabies,<br \/>\n12-gauge buckshot the cure.<\/p>\n<p>Last week, luckily downwind,<br \/>\non a path that edges the salt swamp,<br \/>\nI watched him inch through eelgrass<br \/>\nthen leap high<br \/>\ninto a twisting dive on a vole\u2014footage<br \/>\nI\u2019ve been playing since,<br \/>\nbut wanting to see him again<br \/>\nand here he is, looking like a Wyeth,<br \/>\ndrawn to answer some need.<\/p>\n<p>He stares right at me<br \/>\nbut does he know what I am?<br \/>\nA man either bored<br \/>\nor afraid of the empty white hours<br \/>\nthat make me grateful<br \/>\nfor shape and color,<br \/>\nsomething animate to attach to\u2014<br \/>\na sharp wise face,<br \/>\nears cocked and aimed, rusty flanks,<br \/>\nand a black-tipped tail<br \/>\nthat triggers much more than delight.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>All morning I\u2019ve watched the snow fly, looking up from a page of the same color.
